Singer SongwritersThis is a featured page

In this section I will present some of my favourite singer-songwriters. First among these, of course, is Bob Dylan, who has probably had a greater influence on music than anybody else of his generation.

Woody Guthrie was an earlier influential folksinger and writer, who was a hero to many later musicians, including Dylan.

Malvina Reynolds was a prolific songwriter, who wrote about various socially significant topics, especially the environment. Many of her songs were sung, and popularised, by Pete Seeger.

Another favourite American singer and song-writer is Tom Paxton.

British singer-songwriters include the great Scottish writer Ewan MacColl, who created the Radio Ballads, a series of documentaries using songs to present different sectors of society, and Sydney Carter, a controversial writer of Christian songs.

Being an Australian, I have to include Eric Bogle, who migrated to Australia from Scotland, and who wrote some of the best and most popular songs of modern times.

DavidMcDonagh Childhood memories of the sing-song and the ballad session 0 Jul 31 2010, 7:52 AM EDT by DavidMcDonagh

I grew up in West Cork and childhood holidays were spent in West Galway. The folk/ballad traditions were strong in both areas. My first party was my aunt's 21st when I was about 8. This was in the early 1970s. A beer keg was brought into my grandparents' farmhouse and guests from near and far took turns singing and playing. I was also brought to ballad sessions in pubs in Cork and Galway, where I heard songs as varied as "Sylvest" and "The bould Thady Quill". I won't pretend I was always into folk as I also listened to rock, punk, reggae etc. but folk is the tradition that reminds me most of my family and is also the form that is most accessible for the sing-song.
