Original SongsThis is a featured page

Over the years I have written about ninety songs, not a lot by some standards. Many were written when I was in my twenties or late teens, though I have got back to writing songs in the last twelve years, when I feel I have something to write about.

You can listen to a playlist of my original songs on YouTube in alphabetical order if you have nothing better to do with your time.

I will present these songs in three parts:

1. Early Christian Songs

I was actively involved in a church Youth Group in my teenage years, and wrote songs mainly influenced by the songs of Sydney Carter, which I found very thought-provoking in the way they challenged the complacency of many Christians.

2. Other Early Songs

Many of these songs have a message. After all I grew up during the folk revival when protest songs were popular, especially Dylan's early albums. Some were very serious, while others have a touch of humour. Later songs from this time were influenced by the surrealistic elements that came into Dylan's later songs.

3. Songs from Recent Years

Some of these songs are responses to real events, either in the news or in my own circle of family and friends. In these later songs, and in many of the earlier ones, I generally pay as much attention to the details of rhyme and rhythm as to the subject matter, and I think there are some quite good songs amongst them, but I suppose how other people receive them is what really matters.
