Gordon Meredith Lightfoot, Jr. was born in Canada in 1938. He came to prominence in the 1960s as a singer, achieving international success in folk, country, and popular music. Some of his most popular songs were "If You Could Read My Mind" (1970), "Sundown" (1974) and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." (1976) His songs have been recorded by several artists, including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.

This song was on his debut album, simply called Lightfoot! (1966), which featured many of the songs which have become famous, including "For Lovin' Me," "Steel Rail Blues," and "Ribbon of Darkness."

It has been covered by Harry Belafonte, Judy Collins, Ian and Sylvia, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Kingston Trio, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, Peter, Paul and Mary, Jerry Reed, Elvis Presley, The Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan.
