czerenhk1215 (11 months ago) Goodmorning Mr. Raymond
I like your song very much

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks Czeren. Maybe you can write about it in your journal!

losthills (11 months ago) Another great one, Raymond.
I saw Pete on the Smothers Brothers show. It was a formative period of my life...

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) It would have been a rare chance to hear this great performer. The networks didn't seem to like him for some reason.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Say
Raymond..

"And the big fool said to push on." Very relevant line for today,imo..or am I simply one who 'grizzles'?

Many thanks for this driven, passionate rendering of a powerful song from the pen of Grandpa Pete Seeger.

Peace,
Stewball

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) The current "big fool" would make anyone grizzle! Thanks for your comment.

UncleVRoy (11 months ago) Push on Ray!
Well Done

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Johnny. Good to hear from a fellow teacher.

shawnmcnair1 (11 months ago) Killer tune Raymond! Great energy and you even push it further at the end. Well done!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Shawn. I tried to do the ending the way Seeger does it.

ghostgal30e (11 months ago) Great song a joy to listen too 5***** G.G.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Ghostgal. Glad you enjoyed it.

nondepouk (11 months ago) une bonne chanson pleine de morale. je connais la version en français de Greame Allwright "jusqu'à la Ceinture". war is bad; peace is good for everybody.
congratulations,
HOBOSEAN

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks for drawing my attention to that. I've linked to it via a video response.

Johnfern99 (11 months ago) Great version, Raymond, and a great message that needs to be heard again and again these days! Very interesting info. on the song too! I remember a Springsteen song with the line "Waist deep in the big muddy," in it. Was there any relation to this one?
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Yes. It's a great song about how easily we can lose sight of our moral principles. Obviously inspired by Seeger's song.
"And you're waist deep in the big muddy
You start on higher ground but end up crawling."

lili100l (11 months ago) very nice and energetic presentation! *****
Hope there will soon be more traditional songs..?
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) For the next few days I'm focusing on songs from the Vietnam War era, but there will be more traditional songs coming soon.

lewdite (11 months ago) Another great wisdom song from Pete. Good job.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I'm surprised you haven't done this one yet. Or have you? - I still haven't caught up with all your songs.
lewdite (11 months ago) I haven't, but to tell you the truth I don't remember all the songs that I have posted. You must know better than I (with all your videos) that you soon lose track...
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) That's why I started numbering them all. And, of course, I use my website to try to keep them in some kind of order.

derekeverett (11 months ago) very cool tune again one I'd not heard before. You are pretty much my source for good ol tune's I never heard before now :)
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) It's not heard much these days, but very relevant to the current situation. Thanks for your support.

melvinseatsoup (11 months ago) yhank you so much for posting this ive been wanting to learn it and all the tabs i found for it were wrong, so now i can learn from you and this is definitely the right way to play it. where did you find out how to play it? thanks ray
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Just by listening to Pete Seeger and doing what feels right to me. There's no right or wrong way. Do it your way. :-)

LordDesthorm (10 months ago) Really good job, guy!

annadams95340 (8 months ago) Show Hide Raymond, the public broadcasting stations here ran a Seeger special a month or so ago.

Featured was this song as finally done on t.v. If you don't have it I'd be glad to copy it for you from my vhs tape.

Best

Ann

raymondcrooke (8 months ago) Thanks for the offer. Yes please, If you can do some kind of digital copy, it would be appreciated. i don't have VHS.
Regards
Raymond

annadams95340 (8 months ago) I don't have the technology to copy VHS to DVD yet but I may have some friends that do. I'll check.

Meantime, Pete's Big Muddy is on YouTube (as I remembered after I wrote you yesterday). I have it listed on my favorites. It wouldn't be as good as having the whole broadcast but it's something at least.

Best,

Ann
raymondcrooke (8 months ago) Thanks, Ann. I think that's somewhere in my favourites too.

SirCoughsalot (5 months ago) Right on. Hopefully, the current big fool won't have to drown before we get out of the big muddy. One of my favorite Pete Seeger songs!
raymondcrooke (5 months ago) Strange how we don't seem to learn from past mistakes.

barttheanorak (5 months ago) Crikey. Now I say STUFF Hammer and Flowers. THIS is what I call great music in every possible sense!!!!!!!
raymondcrooke (5 months ago) Hammer and Flowers are okay. We've just heard them so often they've become a bit of a cliche. But, yes, this is a great song.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

I do find it amazing how a song (being brand new to me,as I am hearing it for the first time by way of your rendering here)can be applied to the events of the day. If I had not read your detailed personal and historical accounts of the song first...I would have decided that it was indeed written specifically for today's listenser about current events.

Many thanks for introducing me to this powerful,anti-war tune.:)

Peace,
Stewball

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) When will they ever learn?
I don't think even many Australians would know this song now, but it's as relevant as when I first heard it.

nondepouk (11 months ago) nice; and it's also for our times. some recent
events are so deplorable.
thanks for recall that.
HOBOSEAN

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) They seemed to learn nothing from the Vietnam experience. But I suppose war is good for business. Some companies made huge profits out of selling land mines in that war.

Johnfern99 (11 months ago) Great song, Raymond! It's a shame these kind of songs still apply today.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Unfortunately we will need to keep singing them for a while longer.

kaburto1966 (11 months ago) What great lyrics! Thanks for sharing this song.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Some people thought the lyrics were too harsh at the time. But there's certainly some truth in it.

UncleVRoy (11 months ago) People think that we are maturing or advancing as a race, but this song proves we have not changed, he are still brutes not the civilized folks we think we are!
Take as example Human destruction of Habitat (oh we call this development) and of ourselves (oh we call that War)
LIke we call pig pork to make it easier to eat!

Sorry I vented a little!!

I love eating pig!

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) You're obviously not Muslim. Living in a Chinese society, of course I eat lots of pork. Have you seen my song about eating dog? (Canine Stew)

gitmeout (10 months ago) I am an American and in high school the military did everything thing they could to recruit me. One of the letters the navy sent to my house (addressed to my parents) roughly reflected the message of this song if you discount the sarcasm.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello

Please accept my sincerset congratulations on the new arrival. Alex is indeed lucky to have a grandfather to sing and share all of the joy and substance that folk music has to offer.

A finer choice than "The Marvelous Toy" is a challenge to come by.

Peace,

UncleVRoy (11 months ago) Congrats!

dannyknapp (11 months ago) I was just watching the woodstock video of this a couple days ago. fascinating, those 60's.

shawnmcnair1 (11 months ago) You rule Raymond!!!!!!

lewdite (11 months ago) Your wide range of music knowledge never fails to amaze. This was an absolute classic anti war song that I remember well and your performance is true to the spirit of the song... a kind of gleeful insanity.

ghostgal30e (11 months ago) Thanks for memories.5***** G.G.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

What you have managed to do here with your vibrant rendition of "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" is revitalize some of that good old protest passion within me. I knew it was still there,Raymond...but these recent presentations of yours have helpped in bringing them much closer to the surface for me,so I thank you for this.

Peace,
Stewball

kaburto1966 (11 months ago) I didn't know that story about their names. Thanks for the info.

rixiroo (11 months ago) Wow, I've always thought this song was great. I like your version!

Johnfern99 (11 months ago) It was interesting to hear this version! Great job and thanks for posting! Interesting to see Doc Watson did this one too.

marcoacca (11 months ago) That's a good cover, Raymond. I'll try it sometimes

WizardBogle01 (11 months ago) This sound's exactly like John Jacob Niles's version. Great job.

dannyknapp (8 months ago) quite a story.
raymondcrooke (7 months ago) I remember being very impressed when I first heard this sung by Joan Baez. I had never heard such a long song on any recording before. Now, I'm quite used to singing ballads that go for ten minutes or more but at that time it was a revelation.

empiremonkey (4 months ago) Doc Watson played this!? Woah! I must seek this out. It's one of my favorite of the Child's ballads.

I am always greatly impressed with your uncanny ability to capture the very essence of Dylan's songs...not to mention, being the master @ remembering all of those lyrics that he is famous for writing.

Outstanding,five-star performance.

lewdite (11 months ago) Beautiful song. It sounded so familiar but your notes didn't help... very puzzling! I reread your notes thinking I had missed something but no.... still I know this tune, but from where? I read your notes a third time and there it was at the bottom... Richard Farina. For some reason on the first two readings I did not read the last lines. I have no idea why!
raymondcrooke (9 months ago) I often put notes like that at the end of the information. Maybe I should put it earlier as I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't bother reading to the end.

nondepouk (11 months ago) Show Hide a very beautiful old song. ancestors musicians

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello

You have given this very charming and memorable ballad the top of the line treatment. Such beautifully-written words eminating from your presentation. I really enjoyed this showcase more than you can imagine.

Many thanks,Raymond...I just had to join along with you on the pan flute.

raymondcrooke (9 months ago) A belated thanks for this comment, Max. I can imagine you playing along on the pan flute. I'm sure it would add a lot to the performance.

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Roy, but I'm not going to start explaining the symbolism in my songs. Dylan never did that, so I'm in good company. :-)

dannyknapp (11 months ago) I like this, was wondering what happened at the end of that last one. apparently they just passed by. by the way I wasn't able to view your reply. I had made a comment about how you are able to remember all these songs. I'm sure you remember it, probably word for word. be careful what I say around here.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I don't really remember all those songs, but this one is actually quite easy. Once you learn the last line, the rest falls into place. And anyway I've known this once since I first heard it in the sixties. Actually I find my own songs are the hardest to remember!

bulbheadmyass (11 months ago) This is great, so was the last one, amazing that you can get all those words in! raymondcrooke (11 months ago) The main thing is to take bigger and bigger breaths to cope with the increasing lengths of the lines. Thanks for commenting again.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

Your acapella performance here is nothing short of phenomenal! Poignant, direct and angelic vocalizations are presented here in fine form.

I remember Pete Seeger singing this @ Town Hall. We (the audience) were very quiet during this particular song...the only time we were quiet @ that concert (the rest was a sing-a-long for 3,000.)

Thanks for sharing this tender and heart-felt rendering with us.

Peace,

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) That would have been a great experience. I've never had the chance to attend a Pete Seeger concert, though I often saw him perform live on television.

UncleVRoy (11 months ago) Scottish, you say?
Another question my teacher,
What does "printed on broadsides" mean?

Well done by the way!!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Broadsides were a way of passing on the lyrics of popular songs - for those who were fortunate enough to be able to read. Originally they were handwritten, but they really took off after the printing press was invented. The lyrics were printed on a single large sheet of paper and sold by street peddlers.

blueukulele (11 months ago) Raymond Crooke. the 'Pete Seeger of Youtube'. Keeping Folk music alive! raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Well, there's quite a team here on YouTube keeping folk music alive - including yourself. Let's keep spreading the word.

You've done a tender and sensitive rendering here. I first heard this performed by Tommy Makem many moons ago and it was such a joy to find it here as a part of your incredible catalog...certainly among the crown jewels of that treasure trove of You Tube performances.

Five stars for certain.:)

I had a strong Deja Vu in the middle of this song.

I think I heard this version at 4H Camp many years ago!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I don't know what 4H is, but I can imagine this song would have been sung around a campfire - or maybe it's "On Top of Old Smokey" you remember?

nondepouk (11 months ago) really nice; all I love! thanks. I'll try to sing and play it.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

One of my all-time favorites. Couldn't help but sing a long with you...and accompany on the five-stringer.

A delightfully-rendered chestnut to kick off the day. Bring on the Vegemite to put on that shortnin' bread.:)

Peace,
Stewball
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Even in Hong Kong I eat vegemite on toast every morning. In Australia I once had it on damper - but I've yet to try it on shortening bread. Glad to hear you're joining in with me.

TravisTricky (11 months ago) Wow! I have the chorus burned in my head from over the years, but I had no idea from where (likely Donald Duck to be honest) but I never would have guessed about the true origins of the song overall, thanks for the history and wonderful rendition!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I think it's one of those songs that's always been there in the background. Once heard it's never really forgotten.

ghostgal30e (11 months ago) Great way to start the day Thanks for sharing 5***** G.G.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I'm happy to share my shortnin' bread with you. Thanks for the stars.

Stardomproductions (11 months ago) i want yu to bring your new subscriber videos out!!! plz!!!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I had to stop doing that. I really just don't have the spare time, as the subscriptions come so fast now. Maybe I'll do something when I reach a thousand. :-)

nondepouk (11 months ago) hello, it's funny and ludicrous. congratulations, très bien; encore gagné!
HOBOSEAN
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I'm glad you enjoy my more ludicrous songs. Merci beaucoup.

KamakaTexas (11 months ago) I remember learning and singing this and other traditional folk songs in the sixth grade. I didn't know the Beach Boys recorded it. What a hoot!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) It's on their L.A. album (Light Album).
I'm glad the schools are helping to keep folk music alive.

rixiroo (11 months ago) Show Hide I love this song! Good job, as usual!
:)
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks. Hope you love shortening bread too.

Johnfern99 (11 months ago) Great performance, Raymond! (Never knew Beach Boys did this one.)
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) A bit of a departure from their usual style I think.

blueukulele (11 months ago) Nice song.well sang and performed with heart as usual
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks for listening and commenting.

dannyknapp (11 months ago) I was once watching a band and the bass player was noodling around and came up with the main melody line of this song while warming up. he couldn't figure out what it was, kept playing it every time they took a break and stuff, lol. I think everybody else in the band knew what it was just didn't want to tell him. it was kind of funny. oh, and nice job as always Raymond. peace
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks for that little story, Danny. It's always good to hear of people's personal experiences with these songs.

Gemini730 (11 months ago) I love this song. Your rendition is very nice.
Nelson Eddy did not sing this song in MAYTIME. Nelson sang it on the Edgar Bergen/Charlie McCarthy radio show in 1937/1938. Audiences loved his charming rendtion and he recorded it. 'Shortnin Bread" became one of Nelson`s signature songs. Nelson performed a self-effacing, tongue-in-cheek rendition in the 1946 Disney Animated short feature-WILLIE THE OPERATIC WHALE. Lorraine
raymondcrooke (9 months ago) Thanks for all that interesting information.

milktoastwf (10 months ago) Thanks Raymond for this version...this is the one that I remember being sung to me as a child and the other day I caught myself singing it to my infant son but I couldn't remember where I learned it...thought maybe from an old Tom and Jerry or Warner Bros. cartoon. :) Looking at the dates, my mother was born in 1934, so she was around 3 when Nelson Eddy sang it.

Gemini730 (10 months ago) You may have remembered it from the 1940`s Warner Bros. Cartoon "Swooner Crooners". This cartoon is a parody of popular male singers from the 1940`s-including Nelson Eddy and Bing Crosby. Nelson`s rendition of Shortnin Bread is featured in the film. Lorraine

OXMMadman (10 months ago) This was featured in a trailer for Battlefield Bad Company..And now I know what the actual song is :P

Kwiqshter (6 months ago) That's exactly why I looked it up too! haha

jeddawiya (9 months ago) u did a great job with the song.. :)
raymondcrooke (9 months ago) Thank you. Glad you liked it.

y512516 (9 months ago) BRAVoooo!!!!

RandyHaddock (7 months ago) love it!

you have some mean dance moves man!

themainthing1974 (6 months ago) I think Mama's little baby grew up and died of a heart attack at the age of 30. It was all because of the cholesterol from the shortnin' bread!:)

freepatriot (4 months ago) America's modern fear of good food is really offputting. It's not shortnin' bread that kills people, it's lack of exercise. Feed your kids shortnin' bread and throw away the Nintendo.

Great song.

SirCoughsalot (6 months ago) I've also heard Grandpa on 'The Munsters' sing this.
raymondcrooke (5 months ago) Don't think I've heard that one, though I used to watch The Munsters many years ago.

blueukulele (11 months ago) How Dylan never released this befor the 'bootleg series' I'll never know. It's such a beautiful song.Well performed and an excellent choice.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I think Joan Baez really brought out the beauty of this song.

cleo1994 (11 months ago) Simply beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Cleo.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

You have perfomed this wonderful, sweet Dylan chestnut with all of your heart and soul and have brought to it a freshness and vitality with your clean-cut, simplle and direct presentation. Appropriately and tenderly rendered!

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Stewball. It's great to have people like you who really appreciate and enjoy my songs.

Stardomproductions (11 months ago) GREAT SONG!!!!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Yes, I agree with blueukulele that Dylan should have released it much earlier than he did.

marcoacca (11 months ago) Well done, Raymond.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) hello
Raymond...

I especially enjoyed and appreciated the fact that you've accompanied your beautiful and sensitive handeling of this chestnut with haunting violin instrumentation.

Peace,
Stewball
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Stewball. As usual your comments are so positive. You make it sound as if I really know how to play the violin!

Serge165 (11 months ago) Well Done, raymond, I didn't know you could fiddle! ~Sergekitty
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) A lot of people would say I can't, but it doesn't stop me from trying. I do occasionally put up a fiddle tune.
Thanks for commenting.

Serge165 (11 months ago) Why is that? You're pretty good. Check out some fiddling videos on here as a way to strenghthen your ability

TheRantingBrit (11 months ago) Your vibrato is what makes this fiddleing amazingly beautiful. Loved it so much.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks for the encouragement.

losthills (11 months ago) I don't think there's anybody that doesn't love this song...
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) It's certainly very popular. Very simple, with a catchy tune.

derekeverett (11 months ago) That was really cool thanks! I really enjoyed this :)
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks for listening. My fiddle playing needs a lot more practice.

shawnmcnair1 (11 months ago) Masterful Raymond! The fiddle sounded cool!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Shawn. I need more practice, but I really enjoy playing when I get a chance.
lewdite (11 months ago) Love this song Raymond...

Check out on youtube Amazing Grace History posted by hoover4000
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks for alerting me to that, Lew. I've just had a look at it. A fascinating bit of background information. I'll link to it as a video response if it's accepted, so anyone interested can get to it easily.

blueukulele (11 months ago) fantastic Raymond. I was'nt expecting you to sing so it took me by supris. Really great playing. your quickly replacing Shane Warne as my favourite australian.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I do have a few songs up where I sing with fiddle rather than guitar. I'd do a lot more if I was better at playing it. Thank you for your supportive comments.

kaburto1966 (11 months ago) I don't think I've ever seen anyone sing and play violin at the same time before. Thanks!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Does that mean you haven't seen this one: "70. Beware, Oh, Take Care"? I don't do it very often as I don't find it easy. More often I'll just play a bit of fiddle in between the verses, as in "Three Jolly Butchers" or "The Friar in the Well." Thank you.

lili100l (11 months ago) WOW °-°
Your a capella singing is so good!!!!
(the violin was a bit "unmasking" after the longer solos, showing you had shifted a bit in pitch, but never mind)
Usually there aren't so many long held notes from you, but here I was really amazed! You should sing more like this! (although I also enjoy your livelier folk songs a lot^^)
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Yes, the shifting pitch is a bit obvious. I didn't have time to do a really good take, so I let it go. I wanted to put it up now, because the choir sang it at our concerts on Saturday and Sunday in The Phillippines (totally different version though.) Thanks for your helpful comments.

UncleVRoy (11 months ago) Show Hide Your Fiddle sounds Great!!
I have been thinking about getting one...
Any advice??

BobbiePendland (11 months ago) That song always gives me chills, but your rendition is especially touching. Absolutely beautiful! You are truly gifted!

dannyknapp (11 months ago) that's a gem Raymond ! reminds me of the old folk songs we used to sing while doing household chores around the house, I'm very impressed !
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks a lot for sharing this, Danny. I tend not to use the share facility much, as I don't want to appear too pushy. But I do appreciate it when others judge that my songs are worth sharing. Thanks again.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

Your original composition here is inspired! The simple, direct lyrics were especially appreciated and made it all the more enjoyable. Yes,I can see how one might misinterpret this plendid poem set to a light tune as a children's ditty...but after reading the lyrics (and then carefully listening to them once again)...I can clearly understand what this song is all about.

This was a refreshing and well-crafted rendering of a Raymond Cooke original.

Peace,
Stewball
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Stewball. I used to write some weird stuff in my teens, mainly for my younger brothers and sisters I suppose. I never thought it would reach the kind of audience I can get on YouTube. Thanks for your kind words.

ghostgal30e (11 months ago) Not a children's song But I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing. 5***** G.G.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks for your comment - and rating. Glad you enjoyed it.

marcie99 (11 months ago) thanks to dannyknapp for sending me this video.. i guess he was thinking of those hogs i used to raise!! hhhhhhhhhmmmm bacon sounds pretty good right now!!! this is actually such a very catchey tune! great job!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) I like bacon myself, but I doubt it's an appropriate food for hogs. Thanks for your comment.

coolanddark (11 months ago) cool original composition Raymond!!thanks Danny for sending.though i probably would have found it eventially.lol
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Dan. You have a lot of great original songs. One of these days I hope I get a chance to cover one or two. After all, every one else is doing it! :-)

lewdite (11 months ago) A perfect little song. It actually could be a good children's song.... an instructive lesson on where our food comes from. Maybe it could become a vegetarian anthem.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Not sure that telling vegetarians how delicious bacon is would go down too well. But you're probably right about it being a children's song. They all seem to be about death anyway!

nondepouk (11 months ago) hello, here is a beautiful little song;

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

Folks are under the popular misconception that rap is an entirely new medium...yet within the folk song genre...we have the wonderful talkin' blues which are so closely related (one might even call them a pre-cursor to rap). The chestnut you have just beautifully rendered here is a prime example of this. Many thanks for your work in seeing that the genre carries on to the next folks over the trench.

Peace,
Stewball
ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

I just wanted to mention something which may interest you. When I was an archivist and recording artifacts handler for The Library of Congress...my specific duty was transferring archival field recordings from The John and Allan Lomax Collection held @ the Library. One such recording was of "Bad Lee Brown"...recorded by a blind gentleman singing and strumming away in a railroad depot in NC. The recording derives from 1929...a folk song performed by real folk.

Stewball

raymondcrooke (10 months ago) A belated thank you for these interesting comments, Stewball. The extra information you provide really adds value to my videos.

lewdite (11 months ago) Wonderful rendition of this song... I know it from Clarence "Tom" Ashley.

kaburto1966 (11 months ago) What a great story. I don't remember hearing this song before. Thanks for sharing.

lewdite (11 months ago) It has always amazed me how some songs stick in your mind even after just one hearing. (Does anyone know why?) This famous song is certainly in that category. Well done, as usual, Raymond

rockyriver (11 months ago) that's exactly what happened to me the first time i heard this song, which was in the wondrous ralph bakshi film american pop. i went straight to the library (way pre-google) and got the lyrics. raymond, you're incredible.
raymondcrooke (10 months ago) It certainly had that effect on me when I heard Marlene Dietrich sing it. Thanks for the comment, Lew.

Ann6508 (6 months ago) This is my all time favourite war song, my dear mums father was a POW in ww1, and shes now 80, and she taught me the words to this song. It is the truely international war song. Bless you for posting it, thank you. I used to sing it to my kids to send them to sleep as babies!
raymondcrooke (6 months ago) It's great that this song brings back so many memories for people!

Nanma1 (6 months ago) This was a song that boosted morale in what can only have been a particularly horrendous period for ordinary people of all nations involved in the macabre, horrific theatre of the World Wars in Europe including "sophisticated Human Kind's "worst atrocities. However I agree that this was when young men from all nations were sent off by families and it is that wistful agony that captured this song to be endorsed and translated by all (enemy and foe alike)? Surely that is telling and offers hope?

thanks,

Johnfern99 (11 months ago) Ya play a great fiddle, Raymond! I figured someone like you would be multi-talented!

rixiroo (11 months ago) You are so talented! Lovely song. I always love the sound of fiddles. :)

WilliamCerf (11 months ago) Raymond, I did not know that you were such a fine fiddler. This is gorgeous. I've added it to my favourites.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) hello

Your violin playing (or is that a viola?...sounds like a violin to my ears)is much too good to be buried in the orchestra of The New York Philharmonic. Raymond...

This very poignant story song (which I'm not familiar with) was beautifully and tenderly perfomed with sweetness and great sensitivety.

Thank you for introducing it to me.

Peace,
Stewball
DardisMusic (11 months ago) Perfect comment. I agree completely.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks. He does write some great comments, doesn't he?

shawnmcnair1 (11 months ago) Cool story and song.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) It was very popular in Australia when I was a child, especially as the incident was fresh in our minds. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

nondepouk (11 months ago) beautiful song; the end of the story is good.
well done. belle chanson;
congratulations,
HOBOSEAN
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thank you. It's nice to have a happy ending. ("Ou est mon papa?")

nondepouk (11 months ago) thanks to have show me this mistake. sorry but my english is not good enough; "the daddy was lost"; the end is sad.
thanks sincerely,
HOBOSEAN
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) No, you are correct. It is a happy ending. He thought his Daddy was lost, but, at the end, he found him. I like the way he was asking "Where's my daddy?" when they found him at last, so I agree with you that it is a good ending. Your English is better than my French!

UncleVRoy (11 months ago) Show Hide What is a ute?

justgeifaname (11 months ago) Good job :)

jayrbee60 (11 months ago) I was recently turned on to this song done by the dubliners (Ronnie Drew) and just love it! Thanks for posting!

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

You've managed to render a splendidy superior presentation of this beloved chestnut. I myself had performed this @ Sweet Rosie O'Grady's Bar and Grill here in The Big Apple on St. Patrick's Day...and you are indeed correct in your assertion...everyone joined in on that contagious chorus!

Your showcase here is a blessin' to one's ears,Raymond.

Peace,
Stewball

hultonclint (11 months ago) Great! I wonder why so many Irish songs have "WHACK!"?

SirCoughsalot (8 months ago) Because it makes them fun to sing!

lordi22893 (11 months ago) good work :) as allways

DaraghPhelan (11 months ago) GOd bless England ;) as it is known like you say

"for years Ireland was under the loving, caring and tender care of England" loool well done!

SirCoughsalot (8 months ago) I always thought this one was meant to be ironic. Anyhoo, superb as always. raymondcrooke (8 months ago) Of course it is. So are my comments! But I'm sure you realised that. :-) SirCoughsalot (8 months ago) I love irony.
