This brings back many, many joyous memories of when I first listened to Simon & Garfunkel's seminal LP,"The Sounds of Silence"...recalling where I was while listening to the album all the way through from the opening notes of "Sounds" to the closing notes of "I Am A Rock"...and every track in between including "Kathy's Song".

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your beautifully-executed and sensitively handled rendering.

Peace,
Stewball

ORBSTEWBALL (1 year ago) Greetings
Raymond...

I really enjoy the fact that you are sharing your singer-songwriter talents with us today. I was just looking over the clever and descriptive lyrics that you were so generous and kind enough to share.

I am working out a dobro arrangement for your song and will play along with you here as soon as it is composed.

A simple tune, yet very profound at the same time. Thanks!:)

Peace,
Stewball

Authentic Irish ditty or not...many thanks for perpetuating Molly's memory within our hearts. Such a sweet and sensitive rendering of this beloved chestnut of a ballad to enjoy with my morning java as I slurp my Tim Tams.

Peace,
Stewball

jayrbee60 (1 year ago) Wow Great! I love this song and also thanks for the clarification! I pride myself in knowing the histories of songs also, but this actually surprised me! Thanks for taking the time to write those comments - I'm sure it means alot to more people than just me! I saw her statue on grafton street during a tour, and I don't know if I would have the guts to say that in Dublin! :-)

raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thank you. Peace would certainly be wonderful.

TheBorgLives (1 year ago) I could not resist asking where do you dig up these great songs?

Borggy was here :)

*****
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) If you mean my songs in general, I've been listening to folk music all my life and have a big collection of folk recordings (mainly on vinyl) currently in storage back in Australia. If you mean this particular song, it's a standard part of the repertoire of Welsh choirs, and as a member of one, that's how I got it.

nondepouk (1 year ago) great!nice; congretulations
HOBOSEAN
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Merci beaucoup.

bloodcreture (1 year ago) You honestly know how to find the best regular guitar songs and play them with or without an irish accent. Peace man
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thanks, but this is not a regular guitar song and it would not be appropriate to use an Irish accent as it's originally an English song. I guess a Welsh accent would be okay though.

cleo1994 (1 year ago) Very beautiful...Thanks Raymond

What an appropriate ditty for your return! You've done Woody proud with this wonderful tribute the famous Steinbeck character of the Great Depression.

Your simple,crystal-clear,pure and honest rendering of this beloved story-song is greatly appreciated.

Pax,
Stewball
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thanks for your kind remarks.

DardisMusic (1 year ago) Someone compared me to Tom Joad not so long ago. Although I am not a big Steinbeck fan, I realise what a big compliment I was being paid (in context). So ... appropriate Raymond. Great performance as always!

5 stars!
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thanks. It's a great novel. Pity Woody Guthrie didn't actually read it, though the movie's very good too.

Johnfern99 (1 year ago) At first I thought it was the Springsteen tune that came out a few years ago. I'm ashamed to say I never heard this one. It sounds similar to John Hardy.
Great cover, five stars!
Johnfern99 (1 year ago) Ooops, sorry. I just saw the description where you mention it's the same tune as John Hardy.
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thanks, John. I always enjoy your songs.

412. Wallaby Stew (Traditional Australian)

DardisMusic (1 year ago) Is this the same tune (more or less) as 'The Sick Note/Paddy's Day Off Work' ?

Funny song anyway and nice rendition!
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) It does seem very similar. Probably both are descended from "According to the Act."

kaburto1966 (1 year ago) Show Hide This reminded me of a jingle for a soft drink sold in CA when I was a kid. "Drink me wallaby squash mates, drink lemony wallaby squash..." It was only around for a few years, but I still can't get that jingle out of my head.
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) That sounds suspiciously like another well-known Australian song - "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport," written by Rolf Harris. Quite a catchy tune if that's the one.

kaburto1966 (1 year ago) I just looked up "Tie me..." and yes, that's it! Well, it is good to have better lyrics to that tune! I don't know what wallaby squash is but I never liked the thought of drinking it. (Although the soft drink was quite tasty) Thanks!

babybookworm003 (1 year ago) great song
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thank you. Some of the old Aussie songs are pretty good.

ORBSTEWBALL (1 year ago) Say
Raymond...

What a delightfully comical, upbeat and light-hearted Aussie story song!

Perhpas we can substitute a wombat or even get adventurous and use an echidna. For dessert/pudding,Arnott's Tim Tams are in order...but please...whatever you do...none of that Vegemite for Old Stewball (I'm a New Yorker without the required intestinal constitution!)...LOL

Many thanks Raymond for your wonderful showcase!

Pax,
Stewball
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thanks for your suggestions. For another option see my video response above.
Don't knock Vegemite. Even here in Hong Kong I need to have Vegemite on toast for breakfast every morning.

JBurdoo (1 year ago) Great! I have an old LP with this, it was one of my favorites as a kid.

hultonclint (2 months ago) Just for fun...
I've noticed a couple more songs that use this melody, recently.
"Good Ol' Rebel" (a post Civil War Confederate song)
/watch?v=ZG7uvnUxfzc
"Sink the Bismarck" (about the WWII battle, by Johnny Horton)
/watch?v=KecIdlEAKhU
raymondcrooke (2 months ago) Thanks for that fascinating information, Ranzo. Both those songs are worth a listen. raymondcrooke (2 months ago) Was the second half of this song missing when you saw it? I've noticed that it has shrunk down from 2:11 to 1:10! I'm trying to upload the video again, but so far YouTube has rejected it as a duplicate video. Hopefully, I'll find a way around it.

I am currently studying in Bradford, United Kingdom, and even though i have been here since September 2008, i still feel homesick. And listening to any Malay song especially from P. Ramlee, i just cried. :)

Even malay didn't understand arabic as well , but I believe most arab did not unite to help Palestin people in the name of Allah and the Holy Verses of Quran itself. What a shameful when Egypt and Saudi Arabia become american proxy, just to wait and see palestin people to die. Luckily you are an arab born, understand everything wrote in the holy quran, but it is useless if it is not adapt in ourselves as a muslim, even to help every muslim. Your word presence in a bad point of view

ORBSTEWBALL (1 year ago) Hello
Raymond...

I have fun picking and lucking this one out on the 1942 Deering five-string banjo that my Dad had given me as a youngster. I first heard this song on one of the old 78's in my Dad'd collection that had been left to me...sung by Burl Ives.

Your rendition here is so pure and direct and most-appreciated.

Pax,
Stewball
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) My father also had a great collection of Burl Ives 78s, but this one was on a 10 inch "microgroove" record. Burl Ives was my first exposure to folk music. Joan Baez completed the process about ten years later when I was in High School.

losthills (1 year ago) You really know this song.
Thanks.
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) It was one of the first songs I ever learnt - not long after Jack and Jill and Humpty Dumpty!

UncleVRoy (1 year ago) I want one of those new 6-string Deerings to play this song on!

derekeverett (1 year ago) What a great song, again one I'd not heard before.
geez you know a lot of songs!!! :)
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) It's a very simple little song, but something about it appeals to me. I think I based the melody of my song "Journey" on this tune, though I did not realise it at the time.

ORBSTEWBALL (1 year ago) Say
Raymond...

This was a wonderfully sensitive and pure treatment.

Many thanks for yet another folk song gem rescued from relative obscurity.

Pax,

raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thank you. Peter la Farge is not very well known these days apart from the songs that Johnny Cash covered.

ORBSTEWBALL (1 year ago) Show Hide Hello
Raymond

When I was working @ the Library of Congress archives in D.C (The John and Alan Lomax Field Recordings Collection) as an archival handler and restorer (I was working on transferring "Dink's Song" to acetate) in the early 80's,I had come across a primitive, yet priceless platter of Leadbelly's "Looky Looky Yonder". Your rendition here reminded me of this so,I thank you for performing this wonderful trilogy of chestnuts as well as for providing a wealth of background information.
raymondcrooke (1 year ago) Thanks for that fascinating information. That sounds like a very interesting job

UncleVRoy (1 year ago) Great History Lesson
DO you teach this stuff any where else?

raymondcrooke (1 year ago) I did teach a "Poetry and Song" elective some time ago when I was teaching in Australia. For the last fifteen years my teaching, in Asian schools, has been mainly basic English, though I occasionally use folk songs in my classes.

dannyknapp (1 year ago) thanks for the songs and the lesson. Funny thing I was thinking about posting " I Got Stripes " to the Johnny Cash night. didn't know it came from "Almost Done"

lewdite (1 year ago) Great trilogy... great information. I love Leadbelly!

tamalalala (9 months ago) hihi funny accents, it almost sounds like a dutchman speaking french. But I doubt you're dutch though, as you have an english surname. It's just the 'r' really but mostly everyone has problems with the 'r' except for native french speakers off course. Very nice, light and soft version. Well done!

barttheanorak (7 months ago) Another one from my childhood. We lived near Brussels for a while when I was a little 'un and my mum (1943-2005) bought me records of the French nursery songs so I could learn the language. raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thank you. As I said above, it's one of the first songs I ever learnt.

Goschka (9 months ago) thank you so much for uploading this song!

raymondcrooke (9 months ago) You're welcome. I remember playing the record over and over.

parisboy92 (4 months ago) well i m french and i m 43 old i m remember this song because my dad was jet pilot in french air force but he learned to fly in the USAF at "Craig afb (alabama)" in 51 and he s bring back this tune and all my life i will remember..sorry for my english.and congratulations for your song!
best regards from Paris and god bless America

raymondcrooke (4 months ago)I don't know much about America, but Paris is my favourite city. Thanks for your comment.

HokieofWV (2 months ago) I know it as a Patti Page/Jack Rael song.
raymondcrooke (2 months ago) I know Patti Page did it, but I don't think I've ever heard her recording of the song. The recording I knew as a child was done by a male singer, but no idea who it was.

derekeverett (11 months ago) lol what a great tune! new fav for me for that's for sure!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Not my usual style, but it's a song I've always liked.

nondepouk (11 months ago) very good vocal performance; it's pleasant to hear.
salutations from France,
HOBOSEAN

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Merci encore.

dannyknapp (11 months ago) great song and a fantastic idea ! i need to get a mule.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) So long as you're not looking for a singing partner.

lewdite (11 months ago) Most unusual... don't know what to think?
raymondcrooke (11 months ago)You mean they don't sing to mules in Canada?

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond

What impresses me most is your ability to hit every note right on the mark and remain in key. You have clearly chosen to sing in the register that you feel most comfortable with and have used it to the finest advantage of bringing out the very best in singing this beloved ditty.

...and I know from personal experience that this song can indeed be a challenge to sing properly,so your showcase is even more appreciated by Yours Truly.

Pax,
Stewball (who never drank water)
raymondcrooke (11 months ago)I can't say those high notes were comfortable. It is indeed a challenging song, but it was a request from my wife so, of course, I gave it a try. Thanks for your continuing supportive comments.

Dogsledfan (11 months ago) Allan wasn't exactly singing to the mules as much as he was obliquely trying to get Jeanette MacDonald's attention in the movie "The Firefly". Allan, btw, was a much better actor than Nelson Eddy and it's ashame that he didn't have more of a film career.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Yes, but is it really an appropriate way to attract a woman's attention? Calling a donkey his darling, etc. She'd probably run a mile from such a weirdo.

PinariusNatta (8 months ago) Very good.
raymondcrooke (8 months ago) Thank you.

derekeverett (11 months ago) That is a really good song. Well done Raymond I will have to check out Reg's channel now...

TheraminTrees (11 months ago) Always an intriguing pleasure to see your choice of songs raymond.

Peacedove7 (9 months ago) A really clear expressive voice, strong at times, and at other times so soft and quiet. You really perform a song rather than just sing it. I love the refrain of this song, and like you could not get it out of my head. I was often singing it at work! Beautiful.
raymondcrooke (9 months ago) Thanks for your comment, especially as I haven't had much of a response to this song. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who found the chorus so catchy.

TeamCannabis (8 months ago) Raymond, thank you my friend. Truly, a moving and touching rendition, actually gives me goosebumps! You have given this song what it needed most, with your pure, sweet voice and storytelling performance. Apoligies for not finding it sooner,I haven't been around lately. I am going to get some new material on very soon and look forward to staying in touch with you. Thanks Raymond for the new favorite...your friend and fan...Reg
raymondcrooke (8 months ago) Thanks, Reg. I'm glad you caught up with this at last. I look forward to more of your songs.

GoldenOldies60and70s (7 months ago) Great work Raymond, sounds great! 5/5
raymondcrooke (7 months ago) Thanks for listening.

Serge808 (7 months ago) your understanding of muslims as being deifferent than you is irrelevant, a muslim upbringing vs a christian upbringing is the same, it's all about control....I like your singing and guitar! thank you for your music it's uplifting
raymondcrooke (7 months ago) I agree with you. It's not my song but I think Reg would agree too. We all have a lot more in common than differences.

barttheanorak (7 months ago) So far the only other reference to a "cup of meat" I've heard is in Mighty Quinn.

iskandar63 (7 months ago) Beautiful song. Thanks for sharing.

losthills (11 months ago) One of our greatest songs.
What a tragic failure for our so-called civilization that it is still just as relevant today as the day it was written.
We can sing, my friend, but when will they listen?

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) The answer to that, my friend, is blowing in the wind.

Vorlan (11 months ago) hear hear!

cleo1994 (11 months ago) Great song.
One of good old Donovan's greatest hits back in 1965.
Thanks Raymond!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Cleo. Hard to go wrong with a song like this one.

Vorlan (11 months ago) A brilliant song by a very talented folk artist. Nice rendition Raymond!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks Vorlan. Buffy wrote some great songs. This is one of her best.

shawnmcnair1 (11 months ago) Cool song!!! 5er Raymond!
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks Shawn. I look forward to hearing more of your songs.

ORBSTEWBALL (11 months ago) Hello
Raymond...

Buffy's ditty sadly remains even MORE relevant today.

Many thanks for your pure and unadulterated rendition here for I that you realize that slickness and sweetening would spoil the straitforwardness of the song's message.

Peace,
Stewball
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks, Stewball, for showing your appreciation. Let's hope the message will eventually sink in.

blueukulele (11 months ago) Great song, a well polished performance as usual.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago)Thank you for commenting. Yes, I think it's one of the best songs about war.

cjwaywell (11 months ago) I always enjoy your renditions and I was delighted that you covered this song as it is a classic donovan score. It gives me the greatest of pleasure to award you 5 Stars from myself for this particular Video.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thank you. It gives me great pleasure to receive them from you.

UncleVRoy (11 months ago) "old feudal thinking kills us all"

We must change the language of War and many other aspects of our greed to survive our brutal & fearful nature.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago)True, but it will take a while before this happens.

KamakaTexas (11 months ago)Thank you for covering this BSM song. Sad to say that its message is perpetually relevant. And thanks again for the background info. While I always recognized Buffy Sainte-Marie as a wonderful folk singer, I never knew she was a teacher and artist.

(Spotted a little typo in your vid description. 1984 should be 1964)

raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Oops. Of course it should. I've fixed it up. Nice to know people do actually read the descriptions. Thanks for your comments.

lewdite (11 months ago) Thanks for this Raymond... Buffy Sainte-Marie did have a voice that you couldn't ignore. This is a fine cover. I think I'll put it on my list of songs to do.
raymondcrooke (11 months ago) Thanks. I look forward to hearing your rendition.

Colognefgfg (9 months ago) Hello it is the
